Mining the Past for Gold with Archival Label The Numero Group

LISTEN ON: APPLE SPOTIFY STITCHER

Back before streaming services, and before the internet ushered in widespread distribution, great music could be overlooked for one reason or another. Enter The Numero Group: an archival record label that researches and preserves musical gems by artists and entrepreneurs who found little commercial success upon their material's initial release.

Numero creates compilations of previously released music, reissues original albums and creates album reconstructions from a variety of musical genres. Here to tell the Numero story is Ken Shipley, a former A&R manager for the equally eclectic Rykodisc label and one of Numero’s founders. Ken joins us from Los Angeles. And joining us from Chicago is Tim Zawada, Numero’s Managing Director.

About KEN

Ken Shipley co-founded reissue label the Numero Group in 2003 with Rob Sevier in Chicago. In the growing noise of the so-called reissue field, the Numero Group remains distinct in its quality: deeply researched, expertly resuscitated and lavishly packaged box sets, playlists and ephemera of historic music from the 1950s-1990s. Since its founding, Numero has committed to unearthing precious lost sounds for new audiences, with an unparalleled ear for potential and spirited eye for detail. With hundreds of titles in Numero’s diverse catalog of LPs, CDs, cassettes, 45s, 12-inch singles and playlists, each production illuminates the often herculean efforts of individuals who sang, played, recorded and peddled their art to little fanfare in its day. Ken is a former A&R manager for the equally eclectic Rykodisc label.
